(00:00) Hi, this is Brian French with Wondrous Things. Please visit our website wondrousyenththing.com. Today we are going to share with you a Wondrous Satsuma vase. It’s a very rare masterpiece that would enhance any Japanese fine art collection. This vase is from a small group of ceramics that were made with raised high relief figures, mostly monkeys and sometimes with other animals.
(00:27) This particular vase has monkeys sitting on lily pads with baby monkeys wearing kimonos. Small monkeys playing with crabs. Another monkey is eating grapes while there is another monkey playing with a wasp nest. There are more monkeys holding a lizard and a frog. The neck is raised with a cinnabar red glaze to design.
(00:50) The height of the vase is 14 and 1/2 in. The maximum width of the piece is 10 1/2 in. It is signed on the bottom by the Japanese artisan. The condition of the vase is very good. There are some minor condition issues. Small losses to a leaf, a grape, and a frog’s leg. The price of this Satsuma monkey vase is $16,500. This price compares favorably to other known similar vases in the world.
